Day 11/12: A Cute Boy, My 34th Birthday and why my RUN got cut short

Day 11/12

Yeah, I skipped a day. I woke up at 1:50am yesterday to go to Ironman Wisconsin and got home after 11pm. Sooooo I went straight to bed! Full recap of that coming up soon!

Training and Birthday Weekend

Meanwhile, it was my birthday on Saturday!!! I woke up freaking EARLY and headed to the lake for my Birthday Sunrise! And the ENTIRE heavens opened up for me!

It was such a beautiful and reflective morning for me in my happy place!

Sooooo then this happened!

I was about a mile out from half way and three people were walking toward me. They started screaming out at me because they knew I had headphones in so I ripped them out and they offered me a beer. I laughed and stopped for a second and said I was running and thank you for the offer but 5am and running and beer just didn’t mix for me. One of the guys was VERY insistent and said, just one sip with us and then toss it! So I smirked and said … Well, it is my 34th birthday so what the hell? He popped the top and we all cheered to 34 and took a drink! HAHA! I stopped and chatted with them for about 15-20 minutes. One of the guys actually ran the Berlin, Germany Marathon the same year as I did!!! We laughed and I had about 1/3 of the beer and we talked about everything from meditation to selfie taking techniques! We swapped social media info and off I went to finish my run.

I kept burping up beer so I don’t know if that was my wisest idea to drink beer with 3 random strangers at 5am during a run BUT….Why not! Made some new friends, had some laughs and started my b day out right!

I promise I will remember THIS memory long after I remember the fact that my run got cut from 10 miles to 7.5 miles this day and LIFE is for creating MEMORIES!

And the rest of the reason it got cut down to a shorter run is in one of the questions below! Hahaha!

I played soccer mom the rest of the day and the boys had a party for me with cake and ice cream and we played, by their request, musical chairs with Blink 182 as the music choice! Haha! It was perfect.

Question of the Day

To find the 30 questions I will be answering this month … check back to THIS original blog post.

11. Write a letter to your siblings. If you don’t have siblings, write a letter the the sister or brother you always wished you had.

Well I actually did this just a while back on THIS POST

But for the sake of this project, I wanted to reiterate something brother taught me a few months back. And that is the importance of putting yourself out there. So in honor of him, and brother would be so proud of me! HAHA! I stopped on my birthday run this weekend and talked to a cute boy. Well ok so the situation was, I was running and watching the sunrise and I saw cute boy sitting on the ledge of the lake with his camera set up and his bike. So I stopped my run and was “pretending to take pictures” … Well I mean I actually took some but I was REALLY just thinking of brothers advice to be “out there” and gaining courage to say something … and then figuring out what you even say to a cute boy at 5am taking pictures!

When the time got just to the point that it would be awkward if I stayed any longer and then talked to him, or MAYBE he would actually notice I was “stalling and gaining courage” HAHA … I decided I was 34 fucking years old and if brother believed in me, then I could talk to the boy! So I waltzed over and asked if he was taking pictures. Because that seemed like a logical way to strike up a conversation with someone who is up at 5am on the Chicago Lakefront with their nice camera set up because the answer HAD to be yes and YES is a good, positive place to start a conversation, right? (I seriously have mad flirting skills you guys, ha!)

Anyways, he jumped up and we started chatting and after my initial awkward first statement it was relaxed and fun. We actually ended up watching a solid 10-15 minutes of the sunrise together and just chatting about photography, marathons, how we landed in Chicago, ect. When I NEEDED to get going on my run I said good bye and ran off with a smile and he called out maybe I’ll see you here again another weekend? I said, I was always around at sunrise and running!

THEN….as I was finishing up my run, he passed me on his bike and we both got big smiles and shouted hi! I have to admit I turned around to watch him ride off and almost took out the guy running behind me in the process because I am clumsy like that!

Anyways, so brother … It was nothing more than some small talk with a cute boy on my 34th birthday morning … But it was pretty powerful the lesson you taught me and the example you set. I love you for always!

12. If you had the chance to be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? And who would you be with?

That is EASY …

I would be watching the sunrise at Lake Michigan. It really is THAT special to me. I don’t wake up at 4am on the weekends and then haul ass home to get to soccer games just for kicks … It is because it is my peace. my place. and my spirit is replenished there. And I make time to be where my heart wants to be.

and I would be alone there. Because there is something sacred about that alone time I have with my spirit.

OR someday …

I am going to share that sunrise there with a man I love … who is bat shit crazy enough to wake up and go watch it with me. Or just loves me enough that he would want to share that special time with me. Wouldn’t even have to be running. Maybe just a coffee and snuggling on the beach while that big ball of fire rises and creates its masterpiece in the sky over my city and my lake.

Questions for YOU:

  1. What is the craziest thing that you’ve ever done on a run?
  2. Where in the world do you want to travel to?

  1. Lydia says:

I don’t know about the craziest thing I’ve ever done on a run. But the craziest run I ever did was while I was deployed to Iraq. Our base would get attacked all the time so the Base commander decided you had to wear your body armor and helmet at all times. No exceptions – even for running. I wanted to run so bad so I went outside and ran 3 miles in my helmet, body armor, and running shoes. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do that, but I passed four other people running that way too. We all shared grins as we passed each other. Yep – all part of the crazy club ?

I would love to go to Scotland. It would be amazing to do a destination run while I was there. Maybe someday .

  2. Eric Randall says:

Crazy running – on a submarine, underwater on patrol.
I would love to travel the world more. Would like to see the history in China and do the Great Wall Marathon.
